Turned to the right, this engraved head of George Washington offers a profile angle that differs from the three-quarter views most familiar from paintings and currency. The record dates it to about 1926, when engravings like this were still a common way to reproduce a national hero's likeness for books, school materials, and patriotic displays, even as halftone photographic reproduction was spreading. Most such portraits drew on earlier paintings, especially Gilbert Stuart's, so the image reflects a long tradition of rendering Washington's features. Its fine lines and careful modeling of the face are worth noticing as examples of the engraver's craft.
