Theodore Roosevelt appears here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the right and framed within an oval, a format that was a long-standing convention for engraved likenesses of public men. Steel engraving allowed fine line work and crisp detail that could be reproduced in large numbers, so prints like this one circulated in books, periodicals and parlors. The caption card records no date, so the exact moment of production is uncertain, but the engraved oval portrait belongs to a tradition that flourished in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Roosevelt rose from New York politics to the presidency in 1901.
