Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view turned slightly to the left, the angle photographers favored for bringing out a sitter's features. The picture dates to about 1922, more than a decade after Roosevelt left the White House in 1909 and only a few years before his death in January 1919, so it reflects how he was remembered in his later years. Roosevelt was a prolific public figure, and portraits from this period often circulated as a way of keeping his image before the public, with his vigorous, bespectacled look becoming one of the most recognizable in American political life.
