Few Washington portraits show him full length in uniform beside a horse, as this steel engraving does. The pose points to 1775, when the Continental Congress named him commander in chief of the colonial forces and he went to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take charge of the army besieging British-held Boston. Steel engraving was a leading method for fine book and print illustration in the mid-1800s, producing crisp lines and plates that could be printed many times. The c1858 date places the image in an era when Washington's likeness appeared widely in popular histories and patriotic publications.
