Few images of Washington claim to be drawn from life at this late stage, and this engraved bust in left profile is presented as his last portrait made from life, at age 66. By 1798 he had been out of the presidency for about a year and was living at Mount Vernon, though he was soon called back to lead the army during tensions with France. Profile busts like this one were widely copied in the early republic, where engravings carried his likeness into homes, schoolrooms and public buildings long after he stopped sitting for artists.
