Few documents tie Washington's public career to his private farming as directly as this 1795 certificate from Britain's Board of Agriculture, which named him a foreign honorary member. The board had been founded only two years earlier to promote scientific improvement of farming, and its leading figure, Sir John Sinclair, looked for correspondents well beyond Britain. Washington, who ran Mount Vernon as a working estate and experimented with crop rotation and soil management, was a fitting choice for such recognition. The certificate shows how far his reputation as a planter had traveled beyond America.
