Engraved by J. Norman as the frontispiece to the April 1784 issue of *The Boston Magazine*, this print presents George Washington in the first year of peace after the Revolutionary War, which formally ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Norman worked from an earlier portrait by John Singleton Copley, so the image shows how a painted likeness could be copied into an engraving for wide circulation. Magazine portraits like this one carried Washington's face to readers across the new states, helping to turn a wartime commander into a national hero.
