An engraving titled "Gen'l. George Washington" presents him in his role as commander of the Continental Army, the figure the record places squarely within the Revolutionary War. Dated to 1778, the print comes from the middle of the conflict, a period when Washington's image was being circulated widely in America and abroad to rally support for the cause. Prints like this helped shape the public image of a commander who was still proving himself in the field and whose leadership was far from assured. Engravings of the era were often reproduced in small runs and sold to a broad audience, so they tell us as much about how the Revolution was seen at home as about the man pictured.
