Few French prints of the Revolutionary era present Washington so plainly, with his title, *commandant en chef des armées des Etats-unis de l'Amerique*, set in the caption beneath the portrait. N. Pruneau signed the plate as both designer and engraver, and the imprint shows it was sold from two Paris addresses: the rue Saint-Jacques and a shop run by the engraver Dennel near the Foire Saint-Germain. The date is bracketed as 177-, placing it in the 1770s, when Paris followed the American war closely. France entered the conflict as an ally of the colonies in 1778, and prints like this one helped French audiences put a face to the American commander.
