The French caption calls Washington general in chief of the Anglo-American army and says Congress made him dictator in February 1777. That wording reflects how Paris described the rebellion, not the powers Congress actually granted. The print was engraved by LeBeau after a drawing by Desrais and published by Esnauts and Rapilly on the rue Saint-Jacques, with the date given only as the 1770s. Images like this spread a heroic picture of Washington among French viewers during the American war for independence, which France entered as an ally in 1778.
