This print presents George Washington in his role as a military officer, the subject both the title and the catalog headings single out. The title credits John Trumbull as painter and names an engraver identified only as "Le Roy," so the image reproduces a painted portrait in printed form. Trumbull, a former officer who knew Washington personally, painted him during the Revolution, and engravings like this one carried his likeness to audiences well beyond America. The record dates the print to 1782, late in the war, when Washington's reputation as commander was at its height in Europe as well as at home. Viewers today often note how such prints shaped the official image of the general for the public.
