Here Washington appears in his Masonic role, a side of his public life that gets less attention than his military and presidential careers. He was initiated into a lodge in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1752 and later presided over a lodge in Alexandria, and the fraternity's rituals and regalia were a common subject for patriotic imagery in the nineteenth century. The library's shelflist card credits the print to the Strobridge Lithograph Company, a commercial firm known for inexpensive popular lithographs, though the card gives no date.
