This print shows Washington's death and burial, a subject that the record's heading places at Mount Vernon, his Virginia estate, where he died on December 14, 1799, after a short illness. Its Paris origin is notable: the painting was by the American artist Junius Brutus Stearns, and the lithograph was drawn by Régnier and printed by the Lemercier firm, one of the leading lithographic houses of the nineteenth century. The hand coloring, added to the printed sheet, was a common practice for reproductions of this kind, which were sold to a public eager for images of the nation's first president.
