Washington is shown at prayer, the detail that sets this print apart from other images of the Valley Forge encampment. The Continental Army spent the winter of 1777 to 1778 in hard conditions at that Pennsylvania camp, short of food, clothing, and shelter. The tale of Washington kneeling in a wooded spot to pray comes from a secondhand account recorded long after the war, so it reflects how Americans in the mid-1800s wanted to remember their first president. This lithograph was made in New York by F. Heppenheimer for the publisher Blanckmeister and Hohlfeld around 1853.
