The setting is Washington's winter encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, a site remembered for the suffering of the Continental Army during the winter of 1777 to 1778. Soldiers there faced cold, hunger and disease on a large scale, and Baron von Steuben's drilling before spring helped rebuild the army's training. This color halftone reproduces a painting and was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office around 1911, showing how a Revolutionary War scene reached a wide public through printed reproductions in the early twentieth century.
