Washington and his staff look out over the fighting at the Battle of Long Island, fought in August 1776 in what is now Brooklyn, where the Continental Army suffered a heavy defeat and had to withdraw across the East River to Manhattan. This photograph reproduces a painting by John Ward Dinsmore, so it shows a later painter's account of the scene rather than a record made at the time. The notes date the print to about 1944, and its subject places it among the many images of Washington that show how Americans later pictured their commander during the Revolution.
