Among the many depictions of Washington at Valley Forge, this print places him at the outposts, the sentry lines that watched the approaches to the encampment. The Continental Army wintered there during 1777 and 1778, enduring cold, hunger and disease while Washington worked to keep the force together. The shelflist card carries no date and names a Hinshelwood, R., but that attribution is unverified, so the maker and the print's date remain open questions.
