Washington and Gist among the ice depicts a December 1753 episode in which George Washington and his guide Christopher Gist tried to cross the icy Allegheny River near present-day Pittsburgh on their way back from a mission to the French at Fort Le Boeuf. Floating ice made the crossing dangerous, and the two men were stranded overnight on a small island in the river, where Gist was badly frostbitten. The caption card records no date for the woodcut, but its subject is a well-known moment from Washington's early career, when his report on the journey helped bring attention to the tensions that led to the French and Indian War.
