Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia, provides the setting for this scene of Easter Sunday in 1795, when George Washington was serving as president and still attended the church where he had long held a pew. Joseph Leon Gerome Ferris, a painter known for romanticized scenes of the nation's past, imagined the moment with townspeople in period dress, carriages, and children. The print was issued around 1908 by Brown & Bigelow, a St. Paul firm that made color halftone prints for calendars and advertising. It reflects the early twentieth century's taste for a reverent, comfortable image of Washington more than a documented record of that morning.
