A design for the National Washington Monument, the memorial planned for the capital to honor the first president, is the subject here. Robert Mills's early plan called for a tall shaft ringed by a colonnade and topped by a statue of Washington. Construction began with a cornerstone laid in 1848, but work halted in 1854 amid funding shortages and political disputes. The obelisk was not finished until 1884. The record gives no date for this drawing, so its exact origin and relation to the final design remain uncertain.
