Taken from the top of the Capitol, this panoramic view looks out over Washington City as it stood around 1870, only a few years after the cast-iron dome was completed. The vantage shows the capital's broad avenues and scattered rooftops, with the Washington Monument still unfinished across the open ground, where work had stalled from 1854 until the late 1870s. The view belongs to an illustrated album of the city and its surroundings, and the record links it to the firm E. Sachse & Co., though the catalog marks that attribution as unverified.
