An 1886 engraving by Sylvester, this picture ran in *The Daily Graphic* on April 17 of that year. The paper, launched in New York in 1873, was among the first illustrated daily newspapers in the United States, so its engravings were printed to accompany the day's news. By 1886 the Capitol had its finished cast-iron dome and was the working home of Congress, which gives the scene its setting. The record offers few further details, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the building during that period.
