Washington appears here within an allegory rather than as a plain likeness, a form that drew on classical figures to express civic virtue. The woodcut was printed as an illustration in the 1797 *New England Primer*, a schoolbook that taught generations of American children to read. The caption tracings, which are unverified, list terms such as Liberty, Fame, and Astrea, the classical goddess of justice. Placing the first president among such symbols in a children's text shows how quickly he had become a national emblem by the late 1790s.
