Rather than a battlefield or a ceremony, this print shows Washington himself, presented as the nation's newly chosen leader under the caption "The father of our country." It is a steel engraving by Illman & Sons, reproducing a painting by Col. John Trumbull, who painted Washington from life in the early 1790s. The title ties the image to the election of 1788 and 1789, when Washington was chosen unanimously as the first president. Engravings like this carried his likeness into homes and public buildings long after his death, helping to fix his image as the nation's founding figure.
