Washington's crossing of the Delaware and his attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton on December 26, 1776, is the event this image recalls, though the catalog record marks the setting with a question mark, so the exact scene is uncertain. The picture is a halftone reproduction of an earlier painting, issued by a New York firm sometime in the 1890s. Halftone processes let publishers print inexpensive copies of paintings in books, periodicals, and cheap wall prints, which spread familiar images of Revolutionary heroes to a wide audience. The result shows how late nineteenth-century Americans pictured the nation's founding through reproduced art.
