Washington stands in the snow at Valley Forge, looking down at a trail of bloody footprints left by soldiers whose feet were wrapped in rags or bare. This photographic print from about 1944 reproduces a 1907 painting by John Ward Dunsmore, who specialized in scenes from the Revolutionary War. The episode belongs to the hard winter of 1777 to 1778, when the Continental Army camped in Pennsylvania short of food, clothing and shoes. The footprint story is probably more legend than documented fact, but it captures the suffering of that winter, and the presence of the Marquis de Lafayette among the subjects reflects his close association with the camp.
