Rather than a view of the obelisk as it actually stood, this picture reproduces a painted vision of how the grounds around the Washington Monument might look in the future. The watercolor was made by Jules Guérin, an illustrator known for architectural renderings, and the Detroit Publishing Company photographed it for reproduction. The image reflects the ambitious planning of the period, when the McMillan Commission, working in 1901 and 1902, proposed a grand, orderly park system along the National Mall. Guérin's renderings helped the public picture that redesigned landscape centered on the monument, completed in 1884.
