Linked on its caption card to veterans' holidays, this late-November 1921 view of the Washington Monument suggests the obelisk formed a backdrop for commemorations that season. Completed in 1884 after decades of stalled construction, the 555-foot marble shaft had by then become the capital's central symbol.
