Unlike the many Washington monuments that share this board, this engraving shows the one in Baltimore, which stands on Mount Vernon Place and is often called the first monument raised to George Washington. Its tall Doric column, topped by a statue of Washington, was completed in 1829, years before the Washington Monument in the nation's capital was begun. The print comes from William Cullen Bryant's *Picturesque America*, a late nineteenth-century survey of notable American scenes, so it shows the monument as a later illustrator recorded it rather than as a contemporary view from its own era.
