From a scaffold high on the shaft, this engraving shows workers setting the capstone atop the Washington Monument, the final stone of the obelisk. Construction began in 1848, stalled for years after 1854, and resumed in 1876 under the Army Corps of Engineers, so the summit represented decades of delay. Alexander Millar, who copyrighted the print in Washington, D.C., dated it February 1885, weeks before the monument's dedication, and it captures the precarious, nearly finished stage of the work.
