This lithograph shows the 1848 ceremony that set the cornerstone of the Washington Monument on July 4, the Independence Day date chosen for the start of construction. Benjamin B. French, Grand Master of the Freemasons of the District of Columbia, presided over the Masonic rites, and the subject headings list him as a public figure of that ceremony. The monument took decades to finish because of funding gaps and the Civil War, and it was not completed until 1884. Printed around 1893, the picture looks back on that beginning from the vantage of a finished monument.
