Few scenes from the early twentieth century were as widely reproduced as this view across the Tidal Basin, where pale pink cherry blossoms frame the Washington Monument in the distance. The trees were a gift from the city of Tokyo, and the first ones were planted in 1912, so by the time this print was made around 1920 the blossoms had become a springtime attraction. Hand-coloring was a common way to add color to black-and-white photographs before color processes were practical, and the tinted blossoms here show how the printmaker sought to capture that seasonal display.
