Page 20 of this Washington album presents the Washington Monument as a single plate, one of five images the volume gathers from the capital. The obelisk was finished in 1884 and dedicated in February 1885, and at 555 feet it stood as the tallest structure in the world until the Eiffel Tower passed it in 1889. The photolithographic process used here let publishers reproduce views like this one cheaply in bound volumes, which made them popular with visitors and with people who could never travel to Washington.
