Portraits of Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks appear alongside the Washington Monument here, linking the capital's great obelisk to the Democratic ticket that took office in March 1885. The monument had been dedicated only weeks earlier, in February 1885, after construction stalled for decades amid funding disputes and the Civil War. Hendricks, Cleveland's vice president, died in office later that year, so the pairing captures a brief moment in the memorial's early years as a public site. The picture is worth a closer look for how it places a tribute to George Washington beside the politics of its own day.
