Currier & Ives turned the unfinished Washington Monument into a showpiece in this c1885 chromolithograph, a color print that shows the obelisk rising over the capital at a time when its construction had stalled. Work began in 1848, but funding ran out and the shaft stood at roughly half its planned height for about two decades before Congress resumed building in 1876. The print was issued by a firm that sold such images widely to middle-class households, so it reflects how Americans pictured the national memorial as a patriotic emblem as much as an engineering project. Its bright palette and tidy composition are typical of the company's mass-market color lithographs of the 1880s.
