Robert Mills's proposed design for the Washington National Monument shows a tall obelisk rising above a ringed colonnade, a far grander plan than the plain shaft that was eventually built. The lithograph, printed in Washington and tinted by hand, carries the line "Earnestly recommended to the favor of our countrymen" above the signatures of Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, John Quincy Adams, and others. That wording and the list of names suggest the sheet was meant to win public support for a project that the Washington National Monument Society had been struggling to fund since the 1830s.
