The Washington Monument rises from the National Mall in the nation's capital, an obelisk built to honor George Washington, the first president. Construction began in 1848, stalled for years for lack of funds and during the Civil War, and was not finished until 1884, when the 555-foot marble shaft was dedicated. The tall, plain stone shape was a deliberate choice, meant to signal strength and permanence, and the change in color partway up the shaft reflects the pause in building. Pictures like this one show how the memorial stood out over the flat, open grounds of the young city.
