Few American monuments rise as plainly as the Washington Monument, and this view frames its tall marble shaft above the grounds at its base, with the entrance and the green lawn in the foreground. The obelisk was finished in 1884 after decades of stalled construction and opened to visitors in 1888, and by the 1910s the surrounding grounds were a popular stop for tourists in the capital. The photograph came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American scenic views sold to travelers and publishers.
