This view shows the Washington Monument at a moment of transition, shortly after its marble shaft was topped with a small aluminum-tipped pyramidion. Construction began in 1848 to a design by Robert Mills, then stalled for more than two decades amid funding shortfalls and political disputes. Work resumed in 1876 under the Army Corps of Engineers, and the capstone was set in December 1884. The monument was dedicated in February 1885, and the visible change in stone color partway up the shaft marks where construction resumed.
