This print shows a full-length bronze equestrian statue of George Washington in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, the work of the Berlin-born sculptor Rudolf Siemering. The photograph is dated around April 1897 and was copyrighted in the name of Philadelphia photographer William H. Rau, who produced many views of the city's landmarks. Fairmount Park, set along the Schuylkill River, was then among the largest urban parks in the United States, and the monument's placement there made it a civic showpiece. The statue shows Washington mounted and facing forward, a pose that was common for public memorials of the period.
