George Washington appears here in a c. 1876 print from Wittemann Bros., a New York lithography and printing firm that produced a great many patriotic and portrait images during the decades after the Civil War. The date places the piece in the year of the United States Centennial, when the country marked a hundred years since independence with exhibitions, parades, and a flood of commemorative pictures. Washington was the central figure of that revival of national feeling, and printmakers returned to his likeness again and again, often as a symbol of unity and the Revolution's founding ideals. Looking closely at the print reveals how such images were designed to be hung in homes and public halls as reminders of the nation's origins.
