Edward Savage's stipple engraving of George Washington stands out because it presents the general as a figure of national character rather than of battle. Savage painted the original portrait and then had it engraved, a process that used tiny dots to build soft tones and fine modeling in the face and uniform. Images like this circulated widely in the years after the Revolution, when Americans were eager to see the man who had led the Continental Army and was now becoming the first president. Prints of this kind hung in homes and taverns and helped shape a shared public image of Washington as steady, dignified, and republican in temper.
