Edward Savage both painted and engraved this stipple print, a method that builds tone from tiny dots instead of lines and was popular for portraits in the late 1700s. Dated around 1790, it shows George Washington, who had led the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and was then serving as the nation's first president. Savage made several portraits of Washington, and prints like this one carried the general's likeness to a wide public at a time when few Americans had seen him in person. Although the board files it under Revolutionary War battles, the image is a portrait rather than a scene of combat.
