Few portraits of Washington reached print so quickly. This mezzotint calls him "general and commander in chief of the Continental Army" and was published in London on September 9, 1775, only a few months after Congress chose him for the post in June. The likeness was drawn from life by Alexander Campbell of Williamsburg, Virginia, and the plate carries the imprint of Johann Martin Will in Augsburg, a sign of how widely images of the colonial conflict circulated in Europe. Its appearance in the war's first year makes it an early record of how the new commander was presented to the public before independence was declared.
