This print presents George Washington with a title that identifies him by his two most recent roles: former commander in chief of the armies of the United States and president of the Convention of 1787. That convention met in Philadelphia that summer to draft the Constitution, and Washington's presence as its presiding officer gave the new framework much of its public weight. The record credits Charles Willson Peale with both painting and engraving the image, so it reflects the artist's own portrait work translated into the mezzotint process, which produced soft tonal gradations well suited to a dignified likeness.
