The ladies of Trenton, dressed in white, greeted Washington at the Assunpink Creek bridge on April 21, 1789, as he traveled north to New York for his inauguration. A triumphal arch they raised bore a line honoring him as the defender of the mothers who would also defend the daughters, and young women sang as he passed beneath it. The bridge was the site of fighting in January 1777, when Continental troops held off British forces, which gave the welcome added meaning. Nathaniel Currier's lithograph, made some fifty-five years later, revisits the scene as a patriotic reminder of the first president's journey.
