Here Washington is shown crossing the bridge at Trenton, New Jersey, where in April 1789 a group of women greeted him on his way to New York for his inauguration as the first President. The bridge over the Assunpink Creek had been the scene of fighting in January 1777, when American troops held the crossing during the second battle of Trenton, so the welcome carried a deliberate echo of the war. Currier's lithograph, printed around 1845, shows how Americans of the next generation remembered that moment, with the general's wartime victory and his civilian leadership tied together in one scene.
