Nathaniel Currier's New York firm issued this hand-colored lithograph of George Washington, likely between 1835 and 1856, when the first president was a favorite subject for patriotic prints. Lithography allowed such images to be printed in quantity and sold cheaply, and the color was usually added by hand, so no two copies were exactly alike. Prints like this one carried Washington's likeness into homes, taverns and schoolrooms, keeping his image before a public that was building its own sense of national identity.
