The print takes its title from one of the most quoted descriptions of George Washington, a phrase from a resolution Henry Lee offered in Congress in December 1799, shortly after Washington's death. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, a period when Washington's likeness hung in many American homes and schoolrooms. The title's pairing of wartime leadership with peacetime virtue reflects how the young republic came to see him as a national symbol, a reputation that Currier's shop was eager to supply to a buying public.
