This print depicts the moment at Trenton, New Jersey, in April 1789 when Washington crossed the bridge over Assunpink Creek on his way to New York for his inauguration. Young women greeted him there with flowers and song beneath a triumphal arch decorated with laurel, a welcome that became one of the best-known episodes of his journey. N. Currier issued the lithograph in New York around 1845, when patriotic scenes like this one were popular with a public eager for stories of the nation's founding. Its sentimental staging shows how Americans of that era preferred to remember Washington: as a gracious leader honored with public affection.
